A Second Chance at Living Life after Hip Replacement Surgery

Sometimes a single moment changes the course of your life.

For Seth Horowitz, that moment arrived on an ordinary winter morning outside his Connecticut home.

As he wheeled the garbage and recycling bins to the curb, he stepped onto a patch of black ice he never saw. In an instant, he was on the ground.

The fall shattered his left hip.

The injury was devastating. The emergency surgery to repair it was complex, leaving Seth with hardware that held the joint together—but never truly restored it. Living far from family, he relied on his mother, brother, and sister-in-law to help him through recovery.

Yet even after the fracture healed, something wasn’t right.

Walking became increasingly difficult. Every step required compensation. His right leg took over while his left dragged behind, placing strain on the rest of his body.

As the years passed, the physical challenges became impossible to hide.

“Every time people saw me, they were noticing it. I think people looked more with pity, and it’s never a good feeling.”

For Seth, the loss wasn’t simply mobility. It was independence.

When a cousin in Chicago shared their own successful experience with Dr. Richard Berger, Seth began researching his options. As he learned more about Dr. Berger’s minimally invasive approach and reviewed patient stories, he felt he had found the surgeon who could finally help him move forward.

Traveling from Connecticut to Chicago, Seth met with Dr. Berger and underwent a detailed evaluation.

The X-rays revealed something even more significant than Seth had realized.

“I’d been living with a collapsed hip—a hip that was decrepit.”

For the first time in years, there was a clear path forward.

Once surgery was scheduled, Seth says he began allowing himself to imagine something he hadn’t believed was possible: walking normally again.

Following his minimally invasive hip replacement, that vision quickly became reality.

Today, Seth walks three miles every day without fatigue. Even more remarkably, he’s running again.

“Once I knew I could have the surgery, I knew the dream of being able to walk better could actually happen.”

Throughout his experience, Seth says one thing stood out just as much as the surgery itself—the people who guided him through it.

“Dr. Berger’s staff is amazing. They’re invested in my journey, which is beautiful and wonderful to have this team of people.”

Looking back, Seth doesn’t describe his hip replacement simply as a successful procedure.

He describes it as a gift.

“I felt like this was the second greatest gift I’ve ever gotten. The greatest gift—the gift of life. The second greatest gift was having a new hip so I can really live life again.”

For Seth, hip replacement wasn’t just about relieving pain or improving an X-ray. It restored something far more meaningful: the freedom to move confidently, live independently, and embrace everyday life once again.
