There are athletes who play for recreation. Then there are athletes whose identities are inseparable from their sport.
For Katie Russell, that sport has always been horses.
Growing up in Southern California, she climbed onto her first pony at six years old and never looked back. By the time she was twelve, she owned her first horse. Decades later, she had become one of the most accomplished competitors on the Arabian horse circuit, earning more than 30 national championships.
Success at that level demands far more than talent. It requires strength, endurance, balance, and complete confidence in your body. Every ride depends on subtle movements and split-second communication with an animal weighing more than half a ton.
Then an accident changed everything.
While skiing in 2001, Katie suffered a devastating knee injury, tearing her ACL, PCL, and MCL while also fracturing her tibia. Although she continued competing for years, the damage eventually caught up with her. The joint deteriorated until the cartilage was gone.
Her knee had become completely bone-on-bone.
“My knee basically didn’t work anymore.”
The pain wasn’t simply affecting everyday life. It was threatening the passion she had spent a lifetime pursuing.
To continue competing at the highest level, Katie knew she needed more than a knee replacement. She needed a surgeon who could help her return to elite performance.
Through word of mouth, she kept hearing the same name: Dr. Richard Berger.
After learning about the recoveries his patients were achieving, Katie traveled from Los Angeles to Chicago.
From the beginning, she says the experience stood apart.
“His staff was exceptional. I felt really well taken care of.”
Even more remarkable was Dr. Berger’s confidence. He told Katie she could likely be back to riding and competing within three months.
For many people, that timeline would have sounded ambitious.
For Katie, it became reality.
Just six months after surgery, she returned to national competition and won two national championships.
“He was definitely right.”
Today, Katie says her replaced knee feels stronger than the one she lived with for years before surgery.
“My knee’s better than it’s ever been.”
Looking back, she’s grateful she made the journey to Chicago.
“I would love to give Dr. Berger a big shout out and thank you for doing such a great job on my knee. He’s remarkable. He is the best at what he does.”
Katie’s story is about far more than replacing a worn joint. It’s about restoring the confidence to compete, the ability to perform at the highest level, and the freedom to continue doing what she loves most.
For patients who refuse to let joint pain define what’s possible, that’s exactly what modern minimally invasive knee replacement is designed to achieve.
