For much of her life, strength wasn’t simply something Jody Salisbury admired—it was something she built.
Growing up in Texas, she was always active. Soccer, track, and cheerleading filled her childhood, but it was bodybuilding that ultimately became her passion.
At just 14 years old, Jody decided she wanted to become a professional bodybuilder.
She entered her first competition at 23 and went on to compete in multiple divisions, including women’s physique, fitness, and eventually heavyweight bodybuilding. Years of disciplined training transformed not only her physique but her identity.
Then knee pain began to interfere.
As the pain worsened, the sport she had dedicated herself to became increasingly difficult. Eventually, she made the decision every competitive athlete dreads.
She stopped competing.
Unlike many patients, Jody had a unique perspective on joint replacement. As a physical therapist assistant, she had witnessed recovery firsthand—and one surgeon consistently stood out.
“We knew of Dr. Berger, and it was amazing watching the recovery from his patients—how much less pain they had and how quickly they recovered.”
When it came time to consider knee replacement herself, there was one question she needed answered.
Would she ever be able to return to bodybuilding?
Dr. Richard Berger’s answer was simple.
“You will have no restrictions.”
For someone whose life revolved around strength, those words meant everything.
Jody traveled from Midland, Texas, to Chicago for her minimally invasive knee replacement.
She arrived on Monday.
Surgery took place Wednesday.
Physical therapy began almost immediately afterward.
The recovery exceeded even her high expectations.
Just three weeks after surgery, she was back on the golf course, playing nine holes.
Today, she’s doing far more than that.
She’s returned to the weight room, training with the same intensity she remembers from her twenties.
“I am back doing all the things that I’ve always loved to do. And now I’m back in the weight room training like I did when I was 25.”
Jody credits not only the surgery, but the entire experience.
“Dr. Berger’s staff is outstanding. They are kind. They are helpful. The communication is leaps and bounds above anything I’ve ever seen.”
For Jody, knee replacement wasn’t about slowing down. It was about reclaiming the active lifestyle she refused to leave behind.
Her story is a reminder that, with the right surgeon and the right approach, joint replacement isn’t the end of an athletic journey—it can be the beginning of the next chapter.
